The Infinite Love of God
Reflections by Fr. William Morris, SS

This reflection is the fruit of Fr. Morris’ experience of contemplative prayer. He has put into words his sense of what Jesus is speaking to his soul during a time of contemplation. This reflection is meant to be read out loud and very slowly, allowing pauses between the phrases in order to allow the words to sink deeply into our hearts.

Shall we try to contemplate God?

He so surpasses all of our measurements,

all of our capacities, all of our powers

and abilities to understand.

To hold Him in our consciousness

it is always good to remember that

He is infinite being. Infinite.

We can measure part of the finite,

part of what He does, who He is,

but He always transcends.

And it is good for us to accept that from the beginning.

He is infinite being.

Everywhere present.

Perfect as can be.

Completely perfect in every aspect,

in every attribute.

He is infinitely powerful.

He is infinitely knowing and wise.

He is as good and as holy and as happy and
as peaceful and as beautiful as can be and beyond that.

But for us the great, great, good thing is that

he is infinitely loving. Always loving.

Infinite love in a reality

that is always completely active.

He is absolutely loving within himself.

It is good for us to see that within the Trinity

all three persons are in possession of infinite, infinite love.

They have the Godhead, fully.

Each one of them is God to the full,

totally divine.

Each one of them is giving the full Godhead,

one to the other.

The Father is always giving His total Godhead

to the Holy Spirit and to the Son

with infinite, infinite love.

That’s the gift—His love.

The Holy Spirit is always receiving

and receiving with infinite love,

the love that the Father is always giving him.

He and the Father unite in giving

all of that Godhead to the Son.

The Son is receiving the power to love

to infinity.

And He uses that to give all of His Godhead

to the Holy Spirit and to the Father.

Eternally doing this. No beginning, no end.

They are always giving, even as they are receiving.

They are receiving with infinite love

and they are giving with infinite love.

The total gift of all.

No selfishness of any sort, in the Father,

in the Son, in the Holy Spirit.

No evil, no limitations, no imperfection,

quietly, peacefully, happily,

they are loving one another.
They are being loved. They are giving love to infinity.

Now in creation,

God is loving with the same infinite love.

Everywhere with His creatures

He is giving himself totally.

In so far as we are capable of receiving it,

we are receiving His infinite love.

We are so closed to God,
so imperfect, so sinful, so self-loving

that we often almost have no room for God

in our consciousness.

He does have room for us.

He is completely present,

completely active with infinite love.

All powerfully and all lovingly active

in all your being and mine.

All knowing, He knows all about us

and all about everything.

And He knows with love.

With the same love, He sees that we are
imperfect, selfish, sinful. He knows.

But with all of His infinite love

He is reaching out to us,

to lift us to be the kind of being that He knows

that we can be.

He knows the saints that we can be and he wills

that for us with infinite love because He loves us.

He wants us to be the happiest and holiest

and healthiest and finest human beings that we can be.

The best son or daughter

that we are capable of being. The best child of God.

Adopted into the divine life.

He sees what we are capable of and He wills that,

quietly, powerfully, with infinite love.

He does this with wisdom beyond all telling.

He knows what to do always.

He knows how to do it.

He knows how to accomplish it.

Everything is perfectly easy and he is carrying it out

to perfection always,

as far as He is concerned.

We imperfect little ones fall short always

but that’s because of our imperfection, our finiteness.

Infinite love is at work always with infinite wisdom.

And if we yield to him, everything begins to improve

and reaches something of the perfection

that we are capable of.

He wants you to become a saint, that’s all that a saint is:

One who is being loved increasingly by God, so that

finally they surrender their whole selves to His love.

And from morning until night,
they are being loved by God

into the finest the human beings that they can be.

Loving always, as God does.

Saints too, listening to me would say,

"Yes, but we don’t do it perfectly."

And they would know, and we would know

as we are going along

that God is lovingly giving us insight

into the ways that we need to improve

and in which we can improve.

We can acquire greater loving kindness from Him,

insight and understanding, wisdom and goodness,

power too, greater ability to do the good things of God
and to share the good things of God with those around us.

In everything, LOVE.

God is loving. You are loving. That’s all that sanctity is.

But we are going to make steady progress forward

as we yield to God more and more fully

and let him take possession of our little selves.
